Years after the topic of winter sidewalk maintenance started, the city has decided on what routes to close during the winter.

Tuesday, Timmins council passed a bylaw naming the sections of sidewalks that will not be maintained from Nov. 1 to April 30.

The discussion on it started back in 2019, when staff recommended formally closing sidewalks not maintained over the winter. It's to protect the city from potential liability if there's a slip and fall in the winter. The item returned to the council table earlier this year.

There are 177 kilometres of sidewalks in Timmins. Public Works maintain about 118 kilometres year-round. In the winter, the remaining sidewalks are unmaintained and used for snow storage from road plowing, according to the February report.

The full list of sidewalks affected is available here.
