NEWS RELEASE

TIMMINS POLICE SERVICE

*************************
In light of a recent incident where a child came upon a used syringe, the Timmins Police Service is issuing a Public Safety Advisory to remind parents to be mindful of what to do in these situations.

While these incidents are relatively rare, the potential risk of infection or other health issues are real and should be taken seriously.

Should anyone locate improperly disposed of inter-venous drug paraphernalia (syringes), please call the Timmins Police Service to alert them and remain at the scene until the police arrive.

Do not attempt to dispose of these items yourself.

Children in particular, by their very nature, are curious. Parents are reminded to be vigilant while your children are in public places.

These items should only be handled by Emergency Services personnel who have been properly trained and are properly equipped to handle and dispose of such items.

Sharps containers have been installed at various locations throughout the city in an effort to reduce the incidents where syringes are not disposed of in a responsible fashion.
