Snow is rarely an issue in the north and this year is no exception.

However, the bitter cold the area has seen this winter provides a serious challenge for ice artists with extreme cold advisories being issued on a regular basis.

Seven sculptures have officially entered the contest.

Among the entries is a pair of seals in love, a pack of minions from the movie ‘Despicable Me’ and a fisherman with an oversized catch.

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The winners will be announced Friday evening during the opening ceremonies at Roland Michener Secondary School.

Festivities kick off at 6 p.m. and will feature the music of South Porcupine native Will Gillespie.
