Catholic school board chair accused of accessing child pornography online

The Ontario Provincial Police today sent out the following news release concerning charges laid against the Rick Brassard, current and acting Chair of the Northeastern Catholic District School Board.

Brassard is from Englehart.

"Rick Brassard has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the NCDSB since 2006 and has served as Chair of the Board since being elected by his peers in December of 2007. Prior to serving on the board, Rick enjoyed a career spanning three decades as a teacher and long-time principal with the Northeastern Catholic District School Board and its predecessor boards," says the school board website.

ENGLEHART - On Sept. 12, 2019, members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Temiskaming Crime Unit, Temiskaming Community Street Crime Unit, OPP Digital Forensics Unit and Child Sexual Exploitation Unit commenced an investigation into a person accessing child pornography online. The alleged incidents occurred between Aug. 7, 2019 and Sept. 6, 2019 in the Town of Englehart. 

As a result of the investigation, Richard Brassard, a 68-year-old person from Englehart, was arrested and charged with access any child pornography, contrary to section 163.1(4.1) of the Criminal Code.  

The accused has been released on a Recognizance of Bail and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice on Oct. 29, 2019, in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
