SOUTH PORCUPINE – Winter is quickly on its way and the South Porcupine Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to ensure drivers are prepared and safe during the upcoming snowy season while traveling on the roads.

The OPP is reminding motorists to take the time to prepare themselves and their vehicles for safe winter driving as we head into the winter months.

Have an ice scraper or snow brush in your vehicle at all times to use to make sure your windows are all clear of ice and snow before heading out and your lights are visible.

Equip your vehicle with proper winter tires.

When compared to regular or all-season tires, tests have proven that snow tires provide better traction, control and reduce stopping distances on snow covered and icy roads.

Allow extra time for travelling when weather and road conditions warrant it.

Slow down and adjust your driving to the current road and weather conditions.

Leave extra space between vehicles as stopping distances are more than double on snow or ice covered roads.

If you do need to stop, pull well off the roadway with your four-way flashers on and stay in the vehicle until rescuers arrive.

Refrain from calling 911 or Provincial Communication Center for road conditions.

Road conditions are available on the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario website: www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/conditions or call 511.

You are the one responsible for your vehicle and it is up to you to remain in control at all times.

By doing so, you reduce the risk of injuring yourself or others on the roadways!

We want you to reach your destination safely for you and your loved ones.
