In view of the shortage of skilled workers in Ontario and across Canada, Collège Boréal is offering three new apprenticeship programs.
In September 2017, Boréal will offer the Plumbing Technician program in Sudbury as well as the Motive Power Technician – Truck and Coach program in Timmins. In addition, the Integration Support Services Worker program will be offered online in 2018.
An apprenticeship is a work-based training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade or occupation. Due to baby boomer retirements and an aging population, Canada is facing a serious skilled labour shortage.
Plumbers and mechanics are particularly in high demand in Ontario and across Canada. You must complete an apprenticeship to become a licensed plumber and, to work as a truck and coach technician, you have to be certified or registered as an apprentice through the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD).
As part of an apprenticeship, apprentices benefit from practical on-the-job training from an employer (or sponsor) and in-class learning from a recognized training institute, such as Collège Boréal. On average, an apprenticeship can take two to five years to complete.
Collège Boréal offers several apprenticeship programs in a variety of fields, including carpentry, automotive mechanics, and heavy equipment. Today, Colleges Ontario published the 2016-2017 Key Performance Indicators for Apprenticeship Programs.
According to the rapport, 83.5 per cent of Boréal’s apprenticeship students are satisfied or very satisfied with their learning experience. With this result, Boréal ranks 4th out of all 24 Ontario colleges. In addition, 98 per cent of apprentices would recommend Collège Boréal!
