Beaver dam behind rising water on Porcupine Lake (3 photos)

Work being done to remove beavers and the dam

A beaver dam is backing up water in Porcupine Lake, according to the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA).

In South Porcupine, water from the lake recently started to spill over onto the boardwalk.

Based on historical data, MRCA general manager David Vallier said water levels are higher than normal for this time of year because of the beaver dam.

He said it's located about two-kilometres north/northeast of the bridge.

"We are aware of the dam and steps are being taken to trap the beavers and remove the dam," said Vallier.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry senior media relations officer Jolanta Kowalski said they are reviewing the methodology of removing the dam.

"Once the methodology is finalized and approved, authorization will be granted to remove the dam," she said.
