Attawapiskat drug trafficking suspects arrested at airport

ATTAWAPISKAT - A drug trafficking investigation in a remote Northern Ontario community has led to charges.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) members were made aware that two suspects were trying to bring drugs into Attawapiskat. Through the NAPS northeast drug enforcement's investigation, officers learned that two suspects were arriving at the remote community's airport on Tuesday (Jan. 9) around 3 p.m. 

Both of the suspects were arrested and taken into custody without incident. During the arrest, police seized suspected Oxycodone pills, methamphetamine tablets, and three pounds of cannabis. 

A 30-year-old woman from Attawapiskat is charged with possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000. 

A 41-year-old woman from Attawapiskat is charged with possession of Oxycodone for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and possession of over 30 grams of cannabis in a public place. 

Both of the accused had bail hearings in Jan. 10.

The 30-year-old remains in police custody and is waiting for a future court date. The 41-year-old was released and will appear in court at a later date. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
