For the first time ever, Timmins' Coldest Night of the Year has a lead sponsor.

Northern College and the Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins (ACT) have partnered for the 2020 fundraiser taking place Feb. 22 in Timmins.

“Today’s really about community. It’s about forming linkages with other community partners like the Anti-Hunger Coalition and really celebrating the fact that we can help remove barriers that prevent all people from succeeding and in particular our learners and other marginalized people that are in society,” said Susan Hunter, Northern College director of marketing, communications and external relations.

This is the third annual Coldest Night of the Year event in Timmins. The family-friendly walk is raising money for ACT, which works to increase access to fresh, healthy and affordable food.

Executive director Jennifer Vachon said it's the first time they've had a lead sponsor.

“Our goal this year is to raise $40,000 and so lead sponsorship really helps move us forward toward reaching that goal,” said Vachon.

For Coldest Night of the Year, participants go on a two, five or 10-kilometre walk followed by a light meal. It starts and ends at the Lord's Kitchen.

Vachon said 17 teams have signed up already, and $13,500 has been raised. She said the goal is for at least 25 teams.

There are two ways for people to participate.

You can register a team and commit to a fundraising minimum — for youth ages 11 to 17 the minimum is $75 and for people 18 years and older it’s $150. Or, you can pay the registration fee to participate without fundraising.

By supporting the event, Hunter said the college is showing the community its commitment to being change makers.

"They say it takes a village to raise a child and it takes a community filled with dedicated and caring people to life up those in need, which is why our dedicated staff, administrators, students and faculty are joining together to make this event as impactful as possible," she said in a news release.
