December is the season of giving, and the Timmins Learning Centre is seeking financial support for their annual Sponsor a Child’s Learning Campaign. This annual campaign raises funds to keep the children’s tutoring program running. Though the adult learning program receives government funding to support the costs of staff and supplies, the children’s program relies entirely on individual and community donations.

Since the onset of the pandemic, many students have slipped farther and farther behind their grade levels. Distance learning, hybrid learning, and changes to school routines have left many students struggling to keep up with their peers, and have left families struggling to provide additional educational support for their children. The need for one-on-one tutoring has never been greater.

This year, the Timmins Learning Centre aims to raise more than $50,000 for their children’s program. This will allow them to expand their tutoring capacity and help over 60 children in the Timmins area. Every donation — big or small — is greatly appreciated and goes directly to secure and increase the services offered by the Timmins Learning Centre.

The not-for-profit centre offers one-on-one tutoring in English and French for students struggling with language and math. While they have previously only worked with students between grades 1-8, they recently expanded their services to support high school students. Tutors guide students through learning activities and games, and students may also bring assignments and homework from school. The Timmins Learning Centre provides support to all children, including Indigenous families, newcomers to Canada, low-income families, and students with special needs. The Timmins Learning Centre has been a part of the community for over 35 years, and currently has one qualified teacher, five tutors, and two volunteers working to provide tutoring to students across all four school boards.

The Timmins Learning Centre is a registered charity, and tax receipts can be provided upon request. All donations will be acknowledged on their social media account. If you have any questions, or would like to provide a donation, please contact Genevieve Lemieux at 705-268-8900 or by email at [email protected]
