ALLY is an organization that was formed in March of 2013 within Northern College. ALLY aims to provide assistance to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) identified community members as well as their allies; everyone is welcome. As some are aware, the LGBTQ community faces difficulties in being fully accepted, ALLY aims to help change that by providing educational resources in our drop-in centre (Safe Haven) and by increasing awareness within the Northern College community.
The LGBTQ community face unique situations in regards to coming out, safe sex practices, and acceptance; ALLY aims to aid the Northern College community by offering support through these difficulties and more. The members of ALLY are not certified counsellors, but we are all here to support any individual with any issue they are facing whether it has to do with the LGBTQ community or not.
Within ALLY, Alliance was formed due to a group of second year Social Service Worker students taking on the project of tackling raising funds for ALLY. Alliance consists of five members who are dedicated to embarking on this incredible journey. There will be a bake sale on Wednesday, October 16th, in which Alliance will be selling baked goods along with ALLY bracelets, buttons, and magnets; this bake sale is open to the entire community and will be taking place at Northern College in the front foyer starting at 10 A.M.
The first fundraiser that Alliance is putting on to raise funds for ALLY is a screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The event is free admission; however, donations to ALLY are welcomed. Alliance is encouraging everyone to dress up as their favorite Transylvanian (or in shiny costumes), because there will be prizes given to the best dressed. There will also be a prize for the special opening event which many Rocky Horror fans are aware of and often participate in. Even if you are new to the Rocky Horror Picture Show bring a friend and enjoy the show!
