The reopening of Algonquin Boulevard is within sight.

If the remaining work goes well, the road could be opening back up to traffic Nov. 5, public works manager Ken Krcel told Timmins council tonight.

The $7.2-million project to reconstruct the road and buried infrastructure started back in April.

The project included a full reconstruction of water, sanitary and storm infrastructure, new curbs and sidewalk, new asphalt and new light standards on Algonquin Boulevard from the bridge to Theriault Boulevard.

Krcel said the contractor is in the process of paving the top asphalt. The work still needing to be done includes line painting, concrete work, boulevard work, and tying in side street intersections. The traffic lights should be put in either late this week or next week.

He said the hope is that by a week this Friday the road will be reopened to traffic and means the city is going to have its first new segment of downtown road in a long time.

The project is part of the city's Connecting Link, a 21.35-kilometre stretch of Highway 101 running from Kamiskotia Road in the west to the old railway tracks in Porcupine.

Since 2016 more than $19 million of roadwork has been done on about five kilometres from the top of Rae Hill to Legion Drive.

For work on the remaining section of the Connecting Link, Krcel pitched in a phased plan for the work. More details on that presentation to come.
