A section of Algonquin that's been closed to traffic since the spring is reopening today (Nov. 5).

A section of the main highway through town that's been closed for half the year is on track to reopen today (Nov. 5).

Algonquin Boulevard between the bridge and Theriault Boulevard should reopen to traffic around noon, according to the City of Timmins.

The $7.2-million project to reconstruct the road and buried infrastructure started back in April. The project included a full reconstruction of water, sanitary and storm infrastructure, new curbs and sidewalk, new asphalt and new light standards.

The project is part of the city's Connecting Link, a 21.35-kilometre stretch of Highway 101 running from Kamiskotia Road in the west to the old railway tracks in Porcupine.

Since 2016 more than $19 million of roadwork has been done on about five kilometres from the top of Rae Hill to Legion Drive. The estimated cost of construction from 2020 to completion is over $80 million.

Last week, city staff pitched a new schedule for completing the work. It would see the downtown work pushed up to allow for multi-year contracts.

A report on the recommendation is expected at next week's council meeting.
