9 new COVID cases reported, high-risk exposure issued, outbreak declared

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting nine additional COVID-19 case, has issued a high-risk exposure advisory for Vet's Taxi passengers, and has declared an outbreak in Monteith.

A total of 29 new cases of the virus have been reported today. 

For the new cases, seven are in Timmins and two are in the James and Hudson Bay region. Two people are the contacts of a case, one is related to an outbreak, and the exposure of six cases is under investigation.

The high-risk exposure is for Vet's Taxi passengers who used the service at these times:

  • Between 4 p.m. Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 at 4 a.m. 
  • Friday, May 7 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 9 from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

People who used the taxi service during the affected times are asked to self-isolate and arrange for testing. 

If you have symptoms, self-isolate at home and call the health unit at 705-267-1181.

An outbreak has also been declared at the Monteith Correctional Complex where two people are confirmed cases.

"The PHU is working closely with the Monteith Correctional Complex to ensure the infection prevention and control measures are in place and management is taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19," reads the news release.

To date, there have been 822 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 619 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 203 known active cases.

There is a provincial shutdown and stay-at-home order in effect in until at least June 2.
