9 new COVID cases, 8 recoveries reported in Timmins area today

Nine new COVID-19 cases and eight recoveries are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today.

Six of the new cases are in the Timmins area and three people are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls. 

Five people are the contact of a confirmed case, two people are related to an outbreak and the exposure of three cases is under investigation, according to the health unit. All of the people are in self-isolation.

To date, there have been 605 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 461 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 118 known active cases.

So far, 28,664 people have been vaccinated, which is an increase of 354 since yesterday's report. There have been 29,800 doses administered. As of April 26, 1,136 people had received both doses of the vaccine in the region.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
