7 new COVID cases, 7 recoveries in region today

Seven new COVID-19 cases and seven recoveries are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today.

All of the new cases are in Timmins. 

Four people are the contact of a confirmed case, one case is related to an institutional outbreak and the exposure for two cases is under investigation, according to the health unit. All of the people are in self-isolation.

To date, there have been 622 confirmed caseås of the virus in the region. Of those, 468 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 128 known active cases.

So far, 28,684 people in the region have been vaccinated, which is an increase of 20 from yesterday's report. There have been 29,974 doses of the vaccine administered. As of April 26, 1,136 people had received both doses of the vaccine in the region.

As of Monday, 149 confirmed local cases had been flagged as a variant of concern.

The main variant in the region is the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) variant. There have also been two cases of the South African variant. 

For the identified variant cases, 59.6 per cent have been in Timmins, 37.7 have been in the area of Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls, and 2.7 per cent have been in the Kapuskasing area. 

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
