Officers keeping an eye out for distracted drivers handed out nearly a dozen provincial offence notices.

Yesterday (Oct. 4), Timmins Police did a small-scale cell phone initiative in the north end of town, handing out provincial offence notices to drivers seen using handheld devices.

Six cell phone offence notices were issued, along with five other notices. One of the other notices was for a driver smoking a cigarette in a vehicle with a 13-year-old passenger, which is against the Smoke Free Ontario Act.

"It is hoped that this initiative will have the intended effect on those motorists who persist in failing to take their responsibilities at the wheel seriously," said police.
