Kapuskasing Mayor Al Spacek, 2013 Winner of the Northern Mayor's Jackleg Drilling Contest and Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren will challenge   Northern Ontario mayors to defend the honour of their cities in the 5th Annual Northern Jackleg Drilling Competitions "Mayor's Challenge". The Mayors Challenge is followed by the world's only Ladies Jackleg Competitions and then the fiery paced Boart Longyear Professional Men's Jackleg Drilling Competitions showcasing the skill, precision and speed of the top jackleg miners from around the North.

Kapuskasing's Mayor Spacek asked that drug testing be done jokingly when referring to the Mayoral competition.  Timmins Mayor, Tom Laughren, says that it's amazing to be the host city and in order to continue the Mayor's Challenge, it's only proper to allow other mayors to win so they will come back, returning his banter.

Also in attendance will be the current Northern Jackleg Queen, Tina Pellerin to talk about her first experience with a Jackleg Drill and winning the Northern Ladies Jackleg Open Invitational.

ALSO THE 2011 Men's Professional Northern Jackleg King. Lucien Girard will be on hand to challenge the men and invite them to bring their friends and family to the Miners Barbeque from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m during the Men's playoffs.

The Boart Longyear Jackleg competitions headlines the first day of the two day "The Big Event" Northern Mining Expo at the MacIntyre Community Complex in Timmins Wednesday and Thursday May 28th., 29th. The Mayor's challenge starts promptly after the Big Event Grand Opening Ceremonies both taking place at the outside Aecon Mining podium just north of the MacInytre Curling Club.

This Northern Ontario Mine Expo is the largest two day event in Northern Ontario. Close to 8,000 delegates and contestants will be coming in from all over Northern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec. Billed as "Canada's largest Gold Show".

This giant mining Tradex features over 400 indoor and outdoor exhibits including Canada's largest display of heavy mining equipment. This year's event includes the popular Aboriginal Forum & Luncheon sponsored by Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund. For tickets contact Denise Hardy <[email protected]>. Also aboriginal mining services and training pavilions. Exciting new careers in the modern mining industry will be introduced by over 60 companies in the annual "Mining Career, Education, Skills Training and Job Fair".  You can bring your job resumes and apply directly to the mining companies, colleges, skills training companies and job matching services. No admission will be charged.

There will be cash prize awards for the top performers in the Men's and Ladies Competitions. And the coveted giant Driller Trophy for the the Northern Jackleg King with a special award for this year's Northern Queen. Check www.canadianmining.expo for more information.

The Big Event Northern Mines Expo Grand Opening ceremonies start Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. with the Mayors Challenge following immediately after between 11:30 a.m to 12:00p.m. Ladies Invitational starts at 1:00 p.m. and the Men's Professionals from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (Awards Ceremony 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Aecon podium.) Just bring your socks! Boots, helmets, overalls and equipment provided. You can also register on site starting at 11:00 a.m. by the giant rock display in the Aecon Mining tent right after the Opening Ceremonies. Men can arrange to drill earlier depending on work shifts.
