Heading into 4/20, the local organizer says there’s a lot to celebrate.

This weekend, on April 20, the second annual 4/20 event is taking place in Timmins at the Mattagami River Boat Launch from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be featured speakers, vendors, entertainment, raffles, giveaways, and education. There are also swag bags for the first 100 people, with another 50 available right before 4:20 p.m.

Since the last 4/20 celebration, recreational marijuana has been legalized.

“I am excited to be living history right now, with legalization finally taking place in Canada in my lifetime,” said Kim Cooper in a news release.

“This should be celebrated as a great first step. We no longer fear jail for simple possession, and I think the biggest sigh of relief is coming from parents across the country. They are no longer in fear of losing their children, simply because they consume cannabis.”

According to Cooper, the new challenge is municipal bylaws.

“We are seeing more jurisdictions, tabling policy that will prohibit consumption of this legal product, leaving consumers with no place to go, including their own homes if they are in a rental unit or hotel in the area,” she said.

She is also concerned about medical marijuana patients facing discrimination.

“This is why our Annual 420 Event is even more important than ever this year! We have come a long way with legalization, but we still have far to go for equal rights on consumption and acceptance,” she said.

Last year’s inaugural event in Timmins attracted more than 150 people, and Cooper is expecting more this year.
