41 new COVID-19 cases, 14 recoveries reported today

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting 41 new cases and 14 recoveries today. 

There are 27 cases in Timmins, eight in the area of Cochrane, Mathesion, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, five in the James Bay region, and one person in the Hearst, Hornepayne area. 

The exposure of 31 cases is under investigation, six of the cases are related to an outbreak, and two people are the contacts of a case, according to the health unit. 

To date, there have been 1,266 confirmed cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 933 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are a record 307 known active cases — 174 in Timmins, 78 in the James Bay region, 45 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, four in the Kapuskasing area, five in Hearst, Hornepayne, and one out of region. 

So far, 43,952 people in the region have been vaccinated, which is an increase of 920 since the last report. There have been 49,295 doses of the vaccine administered.

The Porcupine Health Unit continues to have the highest weekly case rate in Ontario.

The weekly case rate (from May 18 to May 24) for the Porcupine Health Unit, which covers the Timmins area, is 333.2 cases per 100,000 population. Peel Region’s rate is 157.9 cases per 100,000 population for the same time period. Toronto Public Health’s rate is 96.2 cases per 100,000 people.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
