The number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 has grown.

Timmins and District Hospital is reporting 22 patients admitted to the facility are COVID-positive. Four of the people were initially admitted for COVID-related treatment while the others tested positive after being hospitalized.

This is an increase from the last report Friday when 13 patients were positive, two of whom were COVID-related admissions.

An outbreak of the virus was declared on Jan. 7.

"We continue to work closely with the Porcupine Health Unit and Ministry of Health, ensuring the continued safety of our patients, staff and physicians," reads today's update.

On Friday, the hospital reported 29 staff were also confirmed cases, with 26 people being in self-isolation due to being high-risk contacts. The number of staff currently affected by the virus was not provided in today's update.

Today, the Porcupine Health Unit reported 38 new cases in the region. Due to changes in testing, the cases are underestimated.
