The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting 38 new COVID-19 cases today (Jan. 10).

Since the last update on Friday, there have been 145 recoveries. Due to changes in how can access PCR testing, case numbers are underestimated.

For the new cases, 20 people are in Timmins, seven are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, five are in the James Bay area, three are in Hearst and Hornepayne, and three are in the Kapuskasing area.

To date, there have been 3,581 confirmed cases in the region. Of those, 2,711 are recovered and 31 people have died. The health unit does not actively report hospitalizations in the region.

As of Friday, there were 13 people testing positive for COVID at Timmins and District Hospital, two of whom were COVID-related admissions. There is an outbreak of the virus at the hospital.

According to provincial data, in the north there are currently 62 people with COVID-19 in hospital, up from 55 yesterday. There are 15 people in ICU, up from 13 yesterday, and nine people on ventilators, up from eight yesterday. It's not clear how many admissions are due to COVID-19 and how many are incidental admissions such as someone going in with a broken leg who also tests positive for COVID.
