26 additional COVID cases reported

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting an additional 26 COVID-19 cases this evening.

These are on top of the 51 cases reported early this afternoon. A record 77 new cases in total have been announced today in the health unit region.

Of the new cases, 12 are in Timmins, 11 and in the James and Hudson Bay region, two are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, and one is in the area of Hearst, Hornepayne.

Eighteen people are the contacts of a case, the exposure of four cases is under investigation, and four people are related to an outbreak.

Since Friday, 167 new cases of the virus have been reported in the region. In 2020, the region had a total of 130 confirmed cases.

To date, there have been 1,139 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. As of Friday, 709 were recovered and 26 people have died. While the health unit announces new confirmed cases on the weekends, the number of recoveries is not reported.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
