The City of Timmins is preparing to accept 250 evacuees from Keewaywin First Nation, who are currently threatened by a large forest fire. Fire Red Lake 23, located approximately 12 kilometers from Keewaywin, began June 15 and has grown to an estimated 55,000 hectares, under what the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) describes as extreme burning conditions.

The fire is listed as not under control. Once again, the city will be working with its partners at Gervais Emergency Consulting, the Red Cross, the Ramada Inn, and the Victor M. Power Airport to make the necessary arrangements during this state of emergency.

“The City of Timmins, its partners and its residents have been wonderful in accepting and accommodating two large groups who were unfortunately displaced from their homes and communities already this year,” said Mayor George Pirie. “We are fortunate to have the resources available and are able to quickly reconvene the Emergency Management team to assist another northern community in its time of need.”

Five flights are scheduled to arrive today, with two additional flights on Friday, for an approximate total of 250 evacuees. The community has a total population of approximately 410.
