23 new cases reported, outbreak declared

There are 23 new COVID-19 cases and an outbreak being reported in the Porcupine Health Unit region today. 

Since the health unit's last report on Friday, there have been 78 recoveries.

For the new cases, 20 people are in the James Bay area, two are in Timmins and one case is in the Kapuskasing area.

The exposure of 16 cases is under investigation and seven people are the contacts of a case, according to the health unit. 

The outbreak is at Dutch Love Cannabis, where two people are confirmed cases that are related to the workplace.

To date, there have been 1,630 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 1,242 are recovered and 27 people have died. There are 361 known active cases — 154 in Timmins, 170 in the James Bay region, 29 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, two people in Hearst and Hornepayne, two in the Kapuskasing area, and four people out of region.

The number of people vaccinated and vaccine doses administered have not been updated yet today.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
