2 more COVID-related deaths reported

Two COVID-related deaths and 33 new cases are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today (March 10). 

Hospitalizations are down by one, with nine patients in the region now testing positive. Three of those people were admitted for COVID-related reasons. There are no ICU admissions for the virus.

The health unit did not report where the people who died were living in the region. So far this year, there have been 18 virus-related deaths. The last fatality was reported on March 2.

The 2022 local deaths have included one woman in her 50s, one man and one woman in their 60s, four men and three women in their 70s, three men and two women in their 80s and a man 90 years or older, according to provincial data. Seven were related to an outbreak. Data on the most recent fatality is not available yet. 

For the new cases, 30 people are in the James Bay area, one person is in Timmins, one in Hearst and Hornepayne, and one in the Kapuskasing area.

To date, there have been 5,834 confirmed cases in the region and 49 deaths. There are 204 known active cases — 19 in Timmins, 13 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, 8 in the Kapuskasing area, 1 in Hearst and Hornepayne, and 160 in the James Bay area.

Due to changes in testing, case numbers are underestimated.
