2 COVID-related deaths, 64 new cases reported Friday

Two COVID-related deaths and 64 new cases are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today. 

There are eight people in hospital with the virus in the region, up from the seven reported yesterday. None of the hospitalizations were caused by COVID.

The health unit did not report where the people who died were living in the region. So far this year, there have been 15 virus-related deaths. The last was reported on Feb. 14.

The recent local deaths have included one man in his 60s, three men and three women in their 70s, three men and two women in their 80s and a man 90 years or older, according to provincial data. Seven were related to an outbreak. Data on the most recent fatalities are not available yet. 

For the new cases, 25 are in Timmins, nine are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, 29 are in James Bay and Hudson Bay, and the location of one is unknown.

To date, there have been 5,431 confirmed cases in the region and 46 deaths. There are 428 known active cases — 94 in Timmins, 55 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, 14 in the Kapuskasing area, 13 in Hearst and Hornepayne, 252 in the James Bay area and one out of region.

Due to changes in testing, case numbers are underestimated.
