$1.3M handed out to 4 local projects

It's from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation

Four projects have picked up more than $1.3 million from the province.

Timmins MPP George Pirie was in town today to make the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) announcement.

The money is for the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB), Parker Construction and Parker Equipment, the Sikh Sangat of Timmins, and the Costello Community Care Centre.

The CDSSAB picked up the biggest portion, getting $741,917 to buy and renovate the former Daily Press building across from the Porcupine Dante Club. The downtown space is now a central food services and security hub, housing the Timmins Food Bank, Anti-hunger Coalition Timmins (ACT), and United Way.

Parker Construction and Parker Equipment received $400,000 to build a heavy equipment repair and maintenance facility, and buy a dozer and excavator. Work is underway to design the new building, which will allow the business to grow its workforce.

The Sikh Sangat of Timmins is getting $102,500 to build a community kitchen and shelter at the gurdwara on Cedar Street South.

There's also $89,057 for the Costello Community Care Centre to install a new steel roof, eavestroughs and downspouts at its Spruce Street North location.
