Northern College announced today that tuition refunds have been provided to 115 full-time students who have withdrawn from their programs as a result of the province-wide faculty strike.

“Colleges have always been committed to supporting students who didn’t feel they could complete their studies at this time because of the strike,” said Dr. Fred Gibbons, president of Northern College.

“Many students who have withdrawn are looking to return to the college in the fall of 2018. Our college, along with the provincial student college application service will be developing a pre-paid application voucher for those students who are wanting to return and complete their college education at Northern.”

The final numbers for student withdrawals were officially released today. Across the province, about 90 per cent of full-time college students have chosen to continue in their programs.

“The majority of our students are continuing with their studies,” President Gibbons said. “We will ensure they get a complete education that provides them with the professional and technical expertise to pursue some of today’s most rewarding careers.”

During the work stoppage, colleges also began working on relief funding for eligible students who were affected by the strike. The criteria for applying for the Student Strike Relief Fund has been publicized and colleges will ensure that all eligible applications are honoured.

“As new innovations and technology transform our economy, it is more important than ever that students get the professional qualifications that come with a college education,” President Gibbons said.

“Our priority is ensuring that students are equipped with the expertise and advanced skills that open the door to many of today’s most in-demand careers.”
