New Food Basics on track to open before the holiday season

People interested in working at the new store can apply now

After years of not having a grocery store in the east end, residents are on track for an early Christmas present.

"Work is progressing on the new Food Basics store in Porcupine. We are looking forward to opening our doors to the community before the holiday season," said Stephanie Bonk, Metro communications manager.

In June it was confirmed that Food Basics is opening at the Porcupine Mall.

Hiring is underway for the new store. Bonk said people interested in working there can apply here.

Work is ongoing inside the mall to prepare the space for the store.

Since Metro closed in 2019, which affected 42 employees at the store, there has been no full-service grocery store in the east end of the city, although Giant Tiger did expand its grocery section.
