Valentine’s Day approaches! This made us think about high school dances and giving away heart-shaped cards to friends or crushes.

Many of us may remember a slow dance with a school crush in a school gymnasium or perhaps working up the courage to slip a Valentine’s card onto the desk of our school crush. This week’s photo takes us back to 1951 and the Kinsmen’s Sadie Hawkins Dance. Sadie Hawkins Dance was usually a middle school or high school dance where the girls asked the boys. Here in Timmins, The Pavilion or “Pav” hosted many of these dances over the years.

In 1938, Timmins High and Vocation School hosted Sadie Hawkins Week. The idea was to give the boys “a break” and allow the girls to do the dating “for a change.” The idea also included the fact that the girls also had to pay for everything.  Many ladies that week escorted their dates to the theatre, on strolls across the city and more. They had to help their date remove and hang their jackets, pay their ticket to a film/show as well as snacks, and escort them home at the end of the evening.

According to the young ladies, they were quite enthusiastic about the change while the boys were quoted saying they hoped the change would go on for another year or two!

Each week, the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre provides TimminsToday readers with a glimpse of the city’s past.
