This past summer I had the opportunity to meet this angler on the water while helping Princecraft Pro staffers Craig Salmonson and Cameron Racine pre-fish for the Longlac Walleye Masters Tournament which was the fourth event on the Northern Ontario Walleye Trail.
That morning while checking out an area with Cameron, a boat came by. After a brief conversation with a father and son team, we learned that they weren't fishing in the tournament, rather just out for the day.
Later that afternoon, we ran into them again in another area. This time the son told us they caught a big walleye. Holding his hands up, he said it was “this big.” Both Cameron and I said, “Wow, that was a big fish.” We all had a chuckle when he said, “No, we didn’t.”
I would like to introduce this week's angler, Eric Landry.
Q: Where were you born?
A: Terrace Bay
Q: Who played a role in getting you started in fishing?
A: My dad taught me how to fish.
Q: As a youth, where did you fish and for what?
A: I fished many places in northern Ontario including Lake Superior for many kinds of fish like salmon, rainbow trout, specs, pike, lake trout, and walleye.
Q: What age did you start fishing?
A: I was six.
Q: How did you get into walleye tournament fishing and why?
A: My dad took me to a derby and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Q: What was your most memorial fishing experience and why?
A: When I got second place in Dubreville.
Q: List any anglers that helped you learn more about fishing over the years.
A: My grandfather.
Q: List sponsors and tournament finishes.
A: My best was second in Dubreville and a couple of top tens in smaller derbies.
Q: Biggest fishing supports over the years? (Example: wife, family, and friends)
A: My family but especially my mom who helps us get ready.
Q: What are some of your favourite fish you like to fish for and why?
A: My favourite is walleye because I love a good fish fry.
Q: What is your favourite fishing technique for walleye?
A: I like bottom bouncing.
Q: Why do you fish walleye tournaments?
A: They are lots of fun. I like to kick butt. I like fishing in new places and meet new friends.
Q: Why did you agree to have your bio done?
A: So my new fishing friends will get to know me better.
Q: Any tips you would give to a new walleye angler looking at fishing the NOWT?
A: Big bait, big fish, big bucks.
Q: What would be some of your greatest accomplishes over the years of fishing?
A: I met Gary Roach and Bob Izumi.
On a final note, anglers should be aware of this team and don't underestimate them. They enjoy the pre-fishing and strategies. I learned afterward that they did compete in the tournament that weekend after all.
