ONTARIO: Damage estimated at $1 million after fire at Cambridge OPP detachment

The fire is believed to have started in the attic, no word yet on cause

CAMBRIDGE - A fire resulted in extensive damage at the Cambridge OPP detachment on Beaverdale Road.

The damage estimate is being pegged at around $1 million.

Officials say a fire broke out around 2:30 p.m., and everyone managed to get out safely.

It's believed the fire started in the attic and that's why smoke alarms did not go off sooner.

Firefighters were on scene dealing with hot spots for several hours.

OPP say the detachment's roof has completely collapsed.

"It's a very volatile situation," says OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt.

Schmidt says they have contingency plans in place, and officers will work out of the OPP detachment in Milton.

The fire marshal has been called in to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Expect a police and fire presence on Beaverdale Road for the next few days.
