Impaired driver assaults gas station clerk: OPP

Police received a call about a suspected impaired driver and minutes later were called about the alleged assault

One person is facing charges after a gas station clerk was assaulted in Cochrane.

COCHRANE - One person is facing charges after police say an impaired driver assaulted a gas station clerk. 

Around 11 p.m. on March 14, James Bay OPP received a call about a suspected impaired driver on Highway 11 in Cochrane. 

"Three minutes later, police received a 911 call reporting an employee at a gas station on Highway 11 in Cochrane was being assaulted," said police in a news release.

Officers determined that the suspect who allegedly assaulted the clerk was also the subject of the traffic complaint. The driver was arrested and brought to the Cochrane detachment for further testing. 

A 24-year-old man from Cochrane is charged with operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), assault, and resisting a peace officer.

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 9 in Cochrane.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
