The OPP says in the month of April, Officers in the North East Region investigated 424 calls related to intimate partner violence, with 121 resulting in criminal charges.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines intimate partner violence as behaviour within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm, including acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse and controlling behaviours. This definition covers violence by both current and former spouses and partners.

Eight out of 10 people who experience intimate partner violence are women or girls.

Indigenous women are three times more likely to experience violent victimization than non-Indigenous women and are 2.5 times more likely to experience spousal violence (Statistics Canada statcan.gc.ca)

There are 12 detachment groups within the North East region, and calls break down as follows:

  • North Bay (North Bay, Mattawa, Powassan) - 25
  • Almaguin Highlands (Burk's Falls) - 18
  • Nipissing West (Sudbury, Noelville, Cache Bay) - 54
