Over 100,000 Canadians are affected by Parkinson’s, an incurable neurodegenerative disease that tends to target the 65 and older demographic.

But this not always the case, Réjean Tellier was diagnosed last year at the age of 54.

The disease affects and progresses differently in everyone, but most suffer difficulty moving, stiffness and tremors.

“So far it’s not too bad. I have tremors in my left arm, trouble with my balance, sometimes my leg drags when I walk. But for the most part, my meds can control it, and I can hide it in public,” said Réjean. “It’s not a death sentence, I stick to my exercises, and I try and stay positive. It’s made easier by having support.”

Réjean currently attends the Parkinson support group in Timmins, where he meets with other individuals with Parkinson’s.

It was at the support group that he learned about the Parkinson SuperWalk, the annual Canada wide fundraiser.

The Parkinson SuperWalk aims to not only raise funds, but spread awareness of the support that is out there for people affected by Parkinson’s.

“More people need to know about the support that is out there for people with Parkinson’s, we are here, and we can help you,” said Réjean “We learn about what meds are coming out, what possible cures are on the horizon. The unknown frightens more than reality, and the support group helps fight the unknown.”
