District School Board Ontario North East is proud to welcome two new student trustees for the 2014-2015 school year.

With the ultimate goal of advancing the student vision, student trustees are elected by their peers to bring student voice to district school board tables.

Kara McDowell is a grade 12 student at Timmins High and Vocational School.

Her favourite subjects are Psychology and Math.

“I am looking forward to this upcoming year, as I think it will be both educational and fun,” says McDowell. “I think the biggest challenge faced by students today deals with stress levels and mental health. We're under so much pressure from having to balance such hectic schedules and I think it becomes overwhelming for so many of us.”

Jenna Belanger is a grade 12 student at Timiskaming District Secondary School.

Her favourite subjects are Art and Photography.

“I think this experience will be fun, and a good asset to my future,” says Belanger. “I believe that bullying is one of the challenges many students face. I think by standing up and having more resources directed to bullying we could overcome these problems.”

“I am pleased to welcome Jenna and Kara as our newest student trustees,” says Director of Education Linda Knight.
“I look forward to working with them at our meetings, and thank them for their interest in representing our students.”
