Shelter decision put on the shelf

Citizens interested in a resolution to the proposed women’s shelter in South Porcupine will have to wait a little longer.

Citizens interested in a resolution to the proposed women’s shelter in South Porcupine will have to wait a little longer.

As city council was in the process of approving the meeting agenda on Monday evening, Ward 2 Councillor John Curley motioned to delay the decision.

“I’d like to defer these items to the next council meeting (November 3) and the reason for that is there has been two meetings in regards to this matter, and a number of questions that have come forward, and the answers were not available at the time” said Curley.

He then assured council that he has a solution.

“I suggested at that time, that we have a follow-up meeting, and I’ll take it upon myself to sit down with that group to get those last answers before we bring this back to council. So if you don’t mind striking it for tonight, not speaking for or against it, just deferring it for now” he said.

Ward 5 councillor and mayoral candidate Todd Lever was slightly puzzled by the motion.

“Can a motion for deferral be made during approval of the agenda?” Lever asked.

Mayor Tom Laughren had a short reply.

“Yes it can. That’s the opportune time to do it.”

Councillors in favor of deferral were John Curley, Gary Scripnick, Noella Rinaldo, Andrew Marks, Michael Doody, Steve Black and Pat Bamford.

Lever was the lone councillor opposed to the motion.
