Northern College’s Apprenticeship, Community and Corporate Training (ACCT) division has received approval from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to deliver the in-class portion of the Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship program at the college’s Timmins Campus.
In the past, local Automotive Service Technician apprentices had to travel to southern Ontario to take the in-class portion of their training in eight-week blocks, incurring the cost of living away from home and being separated from their families.
Northern College plans on delivering the same training in a day release format that will allow local apprentices to stay in Timmins throughout their training.
Apprentices will continue to work with their employer for four days each week, and will spend the fifth in class at the college.
“We’re committed to doing whatever we can to increase access to apprenticeship training in our area, so we’re thrilled to be able to offer the in-school portion of another apprenticeship program,” says Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “Having to leave your job and family behind for months at a time is a major barrier for people seeking apprenticeship training in our area. Programs like this are going to positively impact the skills gap and youth unemployment levels in our region.”
Northern College’s ACCT division also delivers the in-class portion of the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship program in a day release format at the Timmins Campus.
Several other apprenticeship programs are available in a traditional block-based format.
