Timmins will very soon play host to the 2023 Canadian U18 Curling Championships in early February.

With all the buzz about curling around town, it’s no surprise considering how much curling has been a part of our community. This week we look back on the opening of the Timmins Curling Club 99 years ago!

December 1924 saw the grand opening of the new Timmins Curling Rink. Around 200 people were present for both nights of the opening celebrations. The opening included the indoor rink as well as nine outside rinks which hosted players from Montreal, North Bay, Haileybury, New Liskeard, South Porcupine, Cochrane, and Iroquois Falls.

Mr. Noah Timmins himself sent the first stone along the ice to open the festivities. President D. W. O’Sullivan of the Timmins club gave a warm welcome to all the visiting curlers in attendance.  All of the visiting teams were able to play at least one game. Saturday evening of the opening held more formal proceedings. Mr. Timmins presented a silver cup to the local club, which became known as the Timmins Club Competition Cup.

Mr. Sutherland of Haileybury, an avid curler, described to the Porcupine Advance his experience at the club during the opening.

“The new rink is situation in an ideal spot, near the T. & N.O. station, and is a fine building in every respect. There are four sheets of ice, with plenty of room at both ends between the “hack” and the end of the building. There is a club room upstairs at one end and also a room at the same end of the ground floor from which all games may be viewed in solid comfort…. The visiting curlers were enthusiastically received and royally entertained during their stay in the Northern town and hope to make further trips at an early date. Timmins is away to a good start in the roarin’ game…”

We can once again welcome all curlers to the community and cheer them on as they compete in our Northern community.
