Each year I look forward to February and the Timmins Fur Council kids fishing derby. Over the years I have made a lot of new friends while attending this event.

This year will mark the 7th annual Kids Fishing Derby held by the Timmins Fur Council on Feb. 19 on Porcupine Lake.

Over the years the derby has continued to grow and this year is no exception as they are anticipating around 120-150 kids to attend. The derby is completely free for kids under 16 but registration is required and spots are limited.

Time slots available are 10 a.m. to 11a .m., 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m..

To register your child and time slot you would like, please send the childs name, age, parental contact information to Kaileigh Russell here.

Seeing that this derby is for children, the Timmins Fur Council will have free hot dogs, pop and hot chocolate on hand for the kids that might get hungry or thirsty while either waiting for the big one to bite or after reeling one in.

I would highly recommend this derby to families that are looking at a way to introduce their child/children to ice fishing and to the sport of fishing.

I look forward to seeing all those smiling little faces and hearing their stories again this year. Hope to see you there.
