Little anglers take home big prizes (5 photos)

Two-year-old Kai Trepanier and three-year-old Brent Chevrier brought home prizes with their pike at the Timmins Fur Council Kids Fishing Derby

Monday saw 121 young anglers participating in the 7th Annual Timmins Fur Council Kids Fishing Derby on Porcupine Lake in South Porcupine.

With all fishing derbies or tournaments, anglers are at the mercy of mother nature and this was no different to the kids attending the derby.

Monday morning temperatures started off at -7°C with a wind chill of -12°C, however it quickly dropped by noon to a chilly -12°C, with a wind chill of -24°C.

This didn't deter the kids that came out to participate in the derby which ran from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Timmins Fur Council members where on hand for those in need of some help baiting hooks and setting up rods while other Fur Council members made sure to have the free hot dogs, pop, hot chocolate, chips and hot coffee ready throughout the day for the kids and adults to enjoy.

This year's winner of the first of the derby was caught by two-year-old Kai Trepanier and family with a beautiful 23.5 inch pike. To make this more special, this was Kai's first pike.

Winning this years derby was three-year-old Brent Chevrier with a whooping 27.5 inch pike. Besides winning the derby, this happened to be the first time Brent has fished.

I have a feeling that this won't be the last time that both Kai and Brent will be fishing.

The Timmins Fur Council would like to thank all their sponsors for their generous donations and helping to make this another successful Kids Fishing Derby along with all the kids and parents that attended this years derby.
