This past Family Day saw 124 kids register and attend the 8th annual Timmins Fur Council Kids Fishing Derby on Porcupine Lake.
The Kids Fishing Derby started off on Gillies Lake then moved to Pearl Lake and has been taking place on Porcupine Lake now for the past few years.
This year, weather was warmer then years in the past. however the windchill kept the slash on the lake frozen, helping everyone stay dry.
The average age of children participating in the derby this year was six years old.
There were only three pike caught this year. The first catch of the day went to Amelia Scalibrini with a 20-inch pike which helped her finish second place in the derby.
Second catch of the day went to Gavin Gaudreau with an 18.75-inch pike that helped him place third.
The winner of the of the derby with the biggest fish was 5-year-old Olivia Eide with a whopping 30-inch pike. With the win, Olivia will have her pike mounted courtesy of Bob's Taxidermy. Last year’s winner, Brent Chevrier, was presented with his gorgeous mounted pike, donated by Bob's Taxidermy.
There was even a surprise visit from the Timmins Police on their new snowmobiles who dropped by to say hello to the kids during the derby.
No one was left thirsty or hungry as there were free hot dogs, chili, hot chocolate and coffee (donated by South Porcupine Tim Horton's). They even had marshmallows to roast over the fire pit.
Once again, the Timmins Fur Council Kids Fishing Derby was a huge success thanks to all their generous sponsors to the derby and all the children that attended.
