Vessel operator charged with impaired, fleeing police on Moose River

On May 23, 2021 members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police observed a person displaying signs of impairment while operating a vessel on the Moose River in Moosonee.

Further investigation revealed that the driver was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages.

As a result, Gordon Butcher, 63 years-old of Moosonee, was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Flight from peace officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration Ggeater than 80, contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused was released by way of an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 6, 2021 in Moosonee. The accused was issued a ninety day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the vessel was impounded for seven days.
