Two charged after police respond to convenience store theft

The Timmins Police Service has charged two local persons with theft related offences stemming from an incident that occurred yesterday afternoon at an Algonquin Boulevard convenience store.

Timmins Police Service officers responded to a call for service regarding a theft in progress where [it is alleged that] two men had entered the store, collected various items and were in the midst of fleeing without making any efforts to pay for the items.

Responding Timmins Police Service officers took both men into custody upon arrival at the scene.

One of the suspects engaged in resistant behaviour upon being arrested but was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

As a result of the incident, David Sutherland, 35; and Stephen Hookimaw, 38, both of Timmins, have been charged respectively with:
    •    Theft under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Sutherland is charged with a further count of:
    •    Resist peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Hookimaw has been released from police custody on the strength of an undertaking requiring that he attend at Provincial Court in Timmins on Oct. 6 to answer to the charges laid against him.

Sutherland remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him.
