Trespassing call leads to charges in Kapuskasing

Police say the accused was in possession of stolen property, suspected fentanyl

On June 9, 2022, members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a male trespassing on Murdock Street in the Town of Kapuskasing. 

Police recognized a person who matched the description provided and spoke to him, further investigation revealed that the person was in possession of stolen property, and suspected fentanyl.

As a result of the investigation, Stewart Shields, 48 years old, of Opasatika, was arrested and charged with:

  • Trespassing at Night, contrary to section 177 of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC
  • Possession of Break-In Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Heroin, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

The accused was held for Bail Court and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on a later date.
