The Timmins Police Service, in collaboration with McEwen Mining Inc, is issuing a Public Advisory in regards to an ongoing cause for concern related to persistent trespassing occurrences on local historic mine sites.
In the past few months, the Timmins Police Service has responded to calls for service in regards to persons trespassing on defunct mining properties off of Vipond Road and Goldmine Road in the Delnite and Buffalo Ankerite areas.
In some cases, there have been instances of mischief to the fencing and signage surrounding these properties.
These properties are cordoned off by means of physical barriers to deny and inhibit access to these prohibited areas to the general public for personal safety reasons.
Any persons found on such properties will, in the absence of being present for a legitimate purpose, be charged under the Trespass to Property Act.
The assumption of risk lies directly on the shoulders of those persons who choose to willfully violate private property and the applicable statutes that apply to such circumstances.
In most cases, it would appear the violators are local adolescent youths.
That said, an appeal is being made to local parents to address this issue with their adolescent children.
The Timmins Police Service and McEwen Mining Inc view public safety as a common goal and a shared responsibility. Compliance is being sought so that instances of this nature will cease without the need for formal prosecutions to take place.
