Traffic stop nets numerous charges for Kirkland Lake driver

Charges include obstruct peace officer and nine counts of operation while prohibited

KIRKLAND LAKE - On Dec. 4, 2021, frontline members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle on Taylor Avenue in the Town of Kirkland Lake.

During the investigation the driver provided police with a false name. Police were able identified the driver as Shaun Chesworth, 41 years of age of Englehart, Ont. Further investigation revealed that the accused licence was suspended under the Criminal Code (CC) and Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and that the vehicle was uninsured.

As a result, the accused was arrested and charged with:
    •    operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 320.18(1)(a) of the CC (nine counts)
    •    driving while under suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the HTA (two counts)
    •    obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC
    •    fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC
    •    operate a motor vehicle without insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act

The accused was released on Judicial Release Order and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Dec. 23, 2021 in Kirkland Lake.
