The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with a number of Highway Traffic Act and drug related offences stemming from an incident that occurred during the morning hours of Monday, Aug. 1 in a residential neighbourhood in the north end of the city.
While completing patrols of his assigned patrol zone, a Timmins Police Service officer noted that the driver of a passenger vehicle had failed to stop at an intersection controlled by a stop sign.
A traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Maple Street North and Sixth Avenue.
A passenger in the vehicle was not wearing his seat belt as legally required and [allegedly] refused to identify himself to police.
Despite physically resisting the police, the subject was arrested.
Upon arrest, the subject was found to be in possession of quantities of controlled substances. As a result of the incident, Stephane Iahtail, 24, of Timmins, has been charged with:
• three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act
• Resist police officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
• four counts of fail to comply with release order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
• Fail to comply with probation order contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
• Passenger - fail to wear seatbelt contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
• Fail to identify self contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
Iahtail remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins, to answer to the charges laid against him.
