Traffic stop leads to impaired charge in Matheson

The passenger faces charges for possession of break-in instruments

MATHESON – On Feb. 20, 2021 at approximately 11:36 p.m., members of the Matheson Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) initiated a traffic stop on Highway 11 in Matheson.  

As a result of the investigation two people were arrested and charged.  

Krista Powell, 39 years of age, of Hamilton was charged with the following:  

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC), 
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC, 
  • Having care and control of a motor vehicle with unsealed container of liquor contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA), 
  • Drive motor vehicle with cannabis readily available contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act (CCA2017) and, 
  • Speeding 1-49 km/h over posted limit contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).  

The driver was also issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven day motor vehicle impoundment.   

Sean Thorburn, 42 years of age of Hamilton was charged with Possession of break-in instruments contrary to section 351(1) of the CC.  

Both accused were the released on an Undertaking and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 25, 2021 in Timmins.
